TAO THEBARD lyrics : "Dear Officer"

Sixth months ago I gave the bird to a passing cop car,
It spun it's tires around, pulled up next to me, and out climbed a scar.
Because what climbed out wasn't a man but an unfamiliar star,

Burning me with a burden I haven't been able to let go since it burned my heart.

Dear officer, you threatened my first amendment rights,

And you told me if I didn't retract my gesture you'd personally shut off the lights,
in the jail cell you'd keep me in for the night,
Not realizing that such an action would jeopardize my life.

Since that night you've been burned into my brain,
I've been reliving that moment over and over in bittersweet refrain

Because I've been living that moment in repeat like a groundhog's day,
Thinking of all the things I should have and could have and would have left to say.

Dear officer I flipped you off today
I really didn't but if you did like the last time and climbed out of your car,
hand on your gun grip your eyes beaded like they wanted to puncture my face,

this is what I wish I could go back and say.

Sir, even if you're wrong and you think I went too far,

I didn't mean to disrespect you dear officer,
But I did mean to disrespect the tyrant's flag painted on your car.
And I meant to disrespect the violence of your sidearm.

And see I'm afraid to have children,
Because I'm afraid of the world they'll be livin in,

Because I hate the world your boss thinks he's buildin in,
and how many of my friends have killed themselves because of the position you've put them in.

I don't believe in divine retribution so I don't think you need hell,
but I believe I have words that you should heed well,
your paycheck isn't to protect and serve my peoples health,

it's from those who's taxes serve the system well,
in order to protect and increase their wealth.

And just thinking about it I'm damn near in tears
because of how many of my brothers and sisters live in fear,
So If you believe me stop supporting a system of oppression

and start supporting my people that live here,
Also known as everyone I've ever met who walks the streets and has been here.
