Judge slammed his gavel
Looked down at me and smiled,
Said, "I'm gonna find you guilty

In this state's shortest trial."
So go on and call your Daddy
And have him go your bail

Don't even think of runnin' boy
You'll die in that jail.


Well, twenty minutes later,
Sonny met me at Earl's bar
He handed me a pistol and the keys to his car.


I waited until it got dark and I started driving south
State was out to get me though the jury was still out

You'd have to be the devil to do what they say I've done
You'd have to be a damn fool not to try to run
Yeah I admit that I'm guilty of one thing in this world,

I messed around in Texas with the Judge's only girl

So I found me a shallow spot, put the headlights on high,

And I walked across that Rio Grande a free man
On the southern side


Well Momma called this morning and hit me with the news
Said the Judge became a Grampa last night around two
Yeah I can't but smilin' cause it serves that SOB

To be holding a baby that looks "ha" just like me

Momma said he dropped the charges as I damn near dropped the phone

Guess his daughter wants his baby's daddy comin' home

So I found me a shallow spot

And I drove across that Rio Grande a free man
On the Northern side


Well here I stand one more time in front of that ole' judge
With a smile on my face 'cause it's killing him to marry us
