In 1861, the Mexican-American War was done

The Mexican Civil war and the Reform wars had all wrapped up
Benito Juarez was the Mexican president
And all these wars had left their treasury bankrupt


Juarez made a grand decree that no payment would be
Laid down on the debt due on all foreign expenses

But Spain, France and Britain sent naval ships a hittin
Demanding all their money or face the consequences

Britain and Spain negotiated and so they soon withdrew

But France had other plans

Napoleon the 3rd would not be deterred

A Latin empire in Mexico

That would favor French interests

The Second Mexican Empire, oh no


The French army was huge an 8000 man deluge
Moving through the countryside so efficient and swift
But near Loreto and Guadalupe, 4,000 Mexican troops

Defeated that French army the date was May 5th

So now we celebrate on that fateful date

Mexican culture all it's flair and all it's fun
But remember those brave dudes
Who would not be moved

Who took on the big bully and won
