There was a man named Jean Valjean,
a man who stole some bread to feed
his sisters starving child but he would have to pay, another way.

Nineteen years of hard, forced labour,
with only pain and sweat to savour,
the man was dead, lived just a number,

forced to walk the line.
Javert said "Remember me. You are not free. 24601."
On parole Valjean could not find work

but a bishop took him in, but in the night
he took his flight, and stole some silver from the sight.
But the preacher was forgiving,

convinced the guards Jean was no freud.
As they left he told his brother
"I have bought your soul for god."

Valjean he broke parole and hid his name,
became M'sieur la Mayor.
Eight years on the threat was gone, until Javert arrived.

Fantine got fired, Jean's alibi was question by Javert.
He lifts a cart, shows strength and heart,
but Javert changed his mind, and said he was fine.

To house her child Fantine sold hair, her love, her teeth, her life.
She took a swing at some bourgeois thing, and landed in some strife.
Be Valjean stepped in, and made amends, for causing all this pain.

For it was he who made his foreman send Fantine away.
And as she died he promised to save her child
she would make her mother proud.

He would take her from that rotten inn,
to a castle on a cloud.
Ten more years went by,

Marius caught Cosette's eye,
a revolutionary boy, with a heart full of love,
but not for his friend 'Ponine,

from the start she was friendzoned...
she loved him on her own.
The boys, they start a revolution, rebel against the crown.

Their flags rise on the barricade, as furniture comes down.
Javert's a spy, but he gets caught and tied up out the back.
Valjean whips out a knife, and cuts Javert some slack,

but he says "I'll still come after you, 24601."
Valjean made no conditions, and he said the deed was done.
And the rebels fought until tomorrow,

but tomorrow never comes.
Old Jean Valjean and Marius are the only two alive,
But then the boy gets hit but Jean wont quit 'til they find a place to hide.

Javert, he stops them in the street, says
"Move now, and you're dead"
But he lets them go, he doesn't know

how this prisoner got inside his head.
He'll escape now from this world,
and from all les miserables,

his story's over but another one is just about begun.
Cosette and Marius reunite again,
Valjean comes clean to everything, and tells them of his life.

And then he gives them his blessing, to become man and wife.
And as his light leaves him behind, there will be no doubt in his mind.
Who he was.

Who he is.
He's Jean Valjean.
